Something Wicked Woven
Price range: $183.00 through $219.00
The opening stanza of Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a gloomy evening in the thunder and rain. Three witches gather and begin to weave their spell – eye of newt, dragon scales, and owlets wing all get added to the cauldron. What are those odd ingredients, though? It turns out – they’re plants! Some poisonous, some savory, all available in Britain in the 1600s!
Description
Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and caldron bubble.
Those lines kick off the notorious play about witchcraft and ambition, Shakespeare’s “Macbeth”, and captured the minds and imaginations of theater-goers, bookworms, and witches alike. What were all those strange ingredients, anyway?!
Turns out, they’re all plants. Some of them are poisonous, some of them had reputed medicinal purposes, and all of ‘em grew out of the ground and directly into legend. Leaning on my scientific illustration skills and deep love of ancient feminine magick, I started illustrating this design as a labor of nerdiness and love. Now it’s one of my personal favorite designs! (And now that I know that “owlet’s wing” is just garlic, while “tooth of wolf” is entirely non-bone and 100% wolfsbane flower, I feel like I’m a better witch, too!)
This makes a great gift for book lovers, Shakespeare nerds, botanists, English teachers, witches, historians, plant enthusiasts, and fantasy fans alike!
